Vacuums Demystified
We get asked all the time about the vacuums we use. More specifically, why we use them and why they do such a good job. Over the years, Maid Right has tested hundreds of vacuum models from over 15 manufacturers before we became partial to the few models we use today. Plus, we still test new models all the time.

Through this testing we have narrowed down our search for the ultimate vacuum to just a few models. We strived to find a model that would enhance the efficiency of our girls, be light weight, extremely maneuverable, and have an interchangeable attachment system so various tools could be easily switched out. Oh, I forgot power. We were looking for and EXTREME amount of power!

We have looked at canister models, uprights, back packs, and hip vacuums. And if you are one of our lucky customers you know which one we use. For the rest or you the answer is the Hip Vacuum, also some times referred to as the Hipster (though this name signifies a specific vacuum by a company Sandia). The commercial duty hip style vacuum is one of the most efficient vacuums for residential cleaning when used with the proper attachments, as long as you choose a model with the power required to clean in an efficient manor.

Hip style vacuums are light weight, typically under 7lbs. They are worn riding on your hip or lower back. Some even have inflatable lumbar to offer added support for those who wear the vacuum for extended lengths of time. Hip vacuums tend to be very powerful, a list of the most powerful models (and the ones we use) are listed below. Finally, hip vacuums are very versatile. They allow you to change out tools on the fly, go from different surfaces almost immediately, and the weight of the machine is carried on the hip so the arms are less fatigued during cleaning. They are so efficient in fact that a recent study conducted by ICS showed hip and backpack style vacuums to clean the same size room in nearly half the time.

As you may know, our girls use these vacuums while performing their residential cleaning duties for more than just carpets. A hip vacuum fitted with a HEPA style filter is also one of the best ways to dust, effectively trapping dust that would otherwise go airborne with conventional dusting. The key here is to constantly be removing as much dust as possible each time you clean so that subsequent cleanings reveal less and less dust build up.

So which do we recommend? Well we are partial to two models in particular. The First is the aforementioned Hipster, specifically, the Super Hipster with the HEPA filter kit, by Sandia Plastics. This vacuum sells for approximately $470 with an air driven power head and basic attachment package. It is extremely powerful and can tackle any cleaning job as it is truly a commercial duty vacuum. It weighs approximately 7lbs and has a 6 quart capacity. The second is the Kent Euroclean Hip Vac Sr. This model is just over 6 pounds, has a 4 quart capacity and is very powerful for it's incredible small size. It is just larger than a regulation style football.

Whichever model you go with, look for one with at least a HEPA filter, 100 CFM, and 95" of water lift. These numbers represent the amount of airflow as well as the amount of power the vacuum has under load. You can expect a vacuum with these minimum requirements to be at least twice as powerful as any residential duty upright on the market. Some like the Super Hipster with 150 cfm and 120" of water lift are effectively 5 times more powerful that a residential upright.

In our next article we are going to talk a bit more about the other types of vacuums listed, what we think of them, and also make some recommendations on some traditional style uprights.
